When My Ship Comes In

Can I have this
Can we go there
Can I have ribbons
To wear in my hair

So many things
I’d ask of my dad
He stayed very calm
He didn’t get mad

He didn’t say yes
He didn’t say no
I remember the words
He used long ago

The answer that came
Through times thick and thin
We’ll have all that we want
“When my ship comes in”

The ship took forever
It arrived one grey day
The ship came and went
And it took my dad away

I’ve learned to be happy
And content with my lot
And be glad everyday
For all that I’ve got

I don’t look for the ship
With “destiny” on its bow
I enjoy what I have
And live life here and now
