Daybreak

Gone the hustle and the bustle
Gone the traffic and the dust
I’ve moved to the country
I though it a must

Gone the noise and the flurry
And the blare of the horn
Instead gentle breezes
Sing in the ears of the corn

Gone the alarm call each morning
Gone the long traffic queues
Gone that right awful feeling
Those Monday morning blues

It’s like being in heaven
Well nearly but not
So what’s the fly in my ointment?
What’s causing the rot?

Well – as day is dawning
And the sky is aglow
And I’m stretching and yawning
The cock starts to crow

“I’ve started, so I’ll finish”
In true announcers style
The cockerel keeps crowing
For quite a long while

Then the church bells start chiming
In this corner of heaven
I can’t believe all the racket
It’s just turning seven

I don’t want to be wakened
I want to stay in my bed
I’ve no work to go to
I’ve retired instead

The bells aren’t appealing
The cockerel isn’t cute
If I could find a rifle
I’d have something to shoot

The peace has been shattered
I could cry - but I won’t
I just want ten more minutes
So cock-a-doodle-don’t!
