Butterfly Summers

How whimsical the butterfly
Free to dance amongst the flowers
Ever playing, ever flitting
In the sunshine and the showers

I sat in silence and each came to me
On delicate paper wings
I held out my hand and they softly lay
And spoke to me of wonderful things

Sweet gentle butterfly
In meadow green we met
And lay amongst the waving grass
You softly touched me on the cheek
But gently left when summer ended

Sweet strong butterfly
By forceful riverside in flood
We met by ragging torrent
You made me feel safe for a time
Then you left with the storm

Sweet silent butterfly
Beside the sea was where we met
And walked beside the gentle sea
You tenderly touched me on the lips
Like champagne bubbles, here, then gone

Sweet playful butterfly
'twas in forest shade we met
You danced along in front of me
And played a game of hide and seek
But then I lost you in the trees

Happy to recall those butterfly summers
And those remembered with a smile
Here for a season and then gone
Moments in time shared for a while
Gone but never forgotten
