I've been living in France for almost six years now and my French is coming along very slowly indeed. I can read, write and listen to French but have great difficulty with my pronunciation. Someone suggested that I should write a poem in French and this is my one and only attempt. The English translation follows but obviously doesn't rhyme.
Apologies to my French tutor!
Mon premier poème français
Je veux savoir a parler français
Je ne parle pas très bien
Je suis une femme anglaise
Qui écrire des poèmes de mienne
Je voudrais de faire meilleur
Et écrire quelque chose unique
Mais c’est très difficile
Et n’est pas une pique nique !

My First French Poem
(roughly translated)
I would like to know how to speak French
I don't speak (it) very well
I am an English woman
Who writes my own poems
I would like to do better
And write something unique
But it's very difficult
And isn't a picnic!

It's better than my French, which consists of "have you got a room for the night, sorry I'm English, please speak more slowly, two coffees please and unleaded petrol. But somehow I get by. Probably because I never go anywhere without my good lady who fortunately does speak the language, although with the odd mistake.
