Well summer is supposedly here and the schools have broken up for the long summer holidays. When I was a child living in Yorkshire, one of the highlights of the year was a trip, by steam train, to the seaside. We usually went to Morecambe.

Years later I lived in Morecambe for quite some time. Occasionally we went to Blackpool for the day (usually for shopping or the annual illuminations). I have lasting memories of Blackpool being a bit "tacky" - sorry Blackpool!

Home Thoughts When Abroad

Oh to be at Blackpool
Now that the summer’s here
To see the sun a-setting
O’er the whelk stall on the pier

Oh to hear the shouts and shrieks
Of the kiddies and their mums
As first they clip them round the ears
Then smack them on their bums

Oh to smell the fragrance
Of the burgers and the buns
And that dreadful disinfectant
When you’re sat there with the runs

Oh to touch the Golden Mile
With its hats of “kiss me quick”
Am I feeling a bit nostalgic -
Or am I feeling sick?

Oh I never did like Blackpool
It really never was my style
I don’t think I’ll go back there
For quite a long, long while
