So often at the end of a relationship things become very bitter. Why is it that so often all the happy times get trampled underfoot?

Sad But True

If I were dead, although I’m not
You would have treasured still
The happy moments that we shared
Many the sad tear you would spill

If I had shaken off this earthly coil
Whilst I was yours and you were mine
Then all our memories would be honoured
With flowers upon some altar shrine

It was my love that died, not me
So why destroy the past
As if it had never happened
Just because it did not last

The bitter parting hurts much more
Than anything I’ve known
For it was love - not me that died
I was never yours to own

I’m still the person that I was
I treasure still our past
It’s sad but true that you and I
Were never going to last

Safeguard those special memories
Don’t bring them all to nought
For I value still the moments
I won’t destroy the thoughts
